THE Community Development Officer for Arua district, Ayikoru Jean Longo who is also the incharge for persons with disabilities and elderly has complained of exclusion of persons with disabilities in some of the political consultations taking place in the districts.
Ayikoru, who was giving vote of thanks to Hon. Leku Joel Member of Parliament for Terego West who had brought joy to the visual impaired persons both in Arua City and Arua district with white canes, noted that there cannot be strong, effective and legitimate consultations without the inclusion and participation of persons with disabilities.
"We are also voters, we shouted their names 'oyee' but unfortunately when it comes to consultation the politicians leave us as persons with disabilities out, yet we are also voters', she argued.
She thanked Hon.Joel Leku who lobbied white canes for persons with disabilities, for Terego, Arua City and Arua district and said persons with disabilities have no boundaries and there should be no border while helping them.
“We want our MPs to work like Hon.Joel Leku without borders when it comes to service delivery for the persons with disabilities", Ayikoru remarked.
Hon. Leku brought some of the white canes which he lobbied for the visual impaired persons in Terego district to also benefit those in Arua City and Arua district as well,
The CDO seized the presence of Hon. Leku to present some of the challenges faced by Persons with disabilities in Arua City and Arua district such that he (Leku) takes their voices to the Parliament especially incentives to provide disability friendly services including public transport, and also reported to the legislator about lack of scholarship for the persons with disabilities which according to her only two persons with disabilities from West Nile region were able to get government scholarship.
She further reported about extreme poverty among the persons with disabilities, exclusion which she says undermine their dignity and also complained of the use of euphemistic languages of subjective terms instead of using more generic terms when referring to persons with disabilities.
Leku in a brief joy speech to the group of visual impaired persons at the social centre in Arua City, concurred with Ayikoru and said indeed there should be no boundary for helping persons with disabilities and it's responsibilities of every leader to extend any support to them regardless of political constituency which is why he decided to bring some of the supportive devices which he had lobbied for the people of Terego also to benefit those in Arua City and Arua district.
While in Terego West, Leku lobbied water tanks for schools, health centres, Churches and Mosques.
Other items included bicycles, electrical sewing machines , support for orphans, free medical treatment, eye check and eye glasses and mangoe seedlings among other items distributed in Terego West .
